Sage lived in her own mind. It was her refuge and her resource. She'd lived by the immortal words of Don Henley: There is no truth; only data to be manipulated. All things could be categorized, sorted, and stored until they were useful. Everything was everything to her and she was very good at bringing order to the chaos.

Until someone else moved in. It had been her own fault. Her own construct. Diana Fox had never existed outside of Sage's mind. She was a front put on to slip inside Albion's inner circle. All the better to take him down. But, it hadn't gone so well as planned. Or too well. She was too good. Diana was too real. After a while, she had become Diana Fox and Sage was all but forgotten.

The fact that she still owed Pete Wisdom for bringing her back to her senses grated on her nerves more than she cared to acknowledge.

She thought it was over, then. But, Roma's meddling brought Diana back with more tenacity than ever. The sudden influx of power made her stronger; more real. Even though Sage was aware of Diana this time, she was sometimes powerless to stop her.

Like the night drinking with Logan. She'd been a fool to have even one. Never much of a drinker before her troubles, she certainly wasn't one now. Dulling her senses even a little gave Diana the opening she needed to break out. Arrogance was paid for in blood and bruises. His blood. Her bruises. He'd been very sporting about it. Seemed to enjoy it, even.

It had taken almost twenty-four hours of uninterrupted sleep and a couple long, hot baths to feel human again. Not just from the aches of the Danger Room fight with Logan. But, also from the rage of being out of control and the humiliation of allowing it to happen.

Control. She wanted it back. In the worst way. It was why she allowed Charles Xavier back into her head after so long. The mess Roma had made of Sage's mind combined with Diana's strengthened presence was more than she could sort on her own. She needed someone to keep her from being lost to the memories that weren't her own. And he was the only one she believed could do it.

Did she trust him? No. But, he was her best option.

And there was only so much worse the damage could get.
